The first Viennese Waltz competition took place on February 18, 1967, in celebration of the "100 Years of the Viennese Waltz." At that time, 40 couples participated. This period also marked the height of the discussions about whether the Viennese Waltz should be included in the international standard dance program for competitions.
The idea for this competition came from the then-president of the Austrian DanceSport Federation, Mr. Alfred Gruber (Vienna). He also succeeded in garnering support from the city of Vienna. Since then, the city's cultural office has been promoting this Viennese Waltz competition.
Since 1970, the debate over the Viennese Waltz has been settled. It was mandated by the International DanceSport Federation as a permanent part of the standard dances.
Since 1993, the Viennese Waltz competition has been open internationally. In memory of Mr. Gruber, the best Austrian couple is awarded a challenge cup.
Just like in 2023, this year's Viennese Waltz competition will again be organized by the UTSK Casino Wien.
Angelo Volpe Cup The highest-ranked Austrian couple (regardless of age category) that has not yet reached the S-Class (top class) at the time of the Viennese Waltz competition will receive the "Angelo Volpe Youth Cup."
Therefore it is required to dance both left and right waltzes, as well as a left and right Fleckerl.
Alfred Gruber Cup The winning couple of the Viennese Waltz competition will receive the "Alfred Gruber Memorial Cup."
Johann Strauss We are delighted to announce that after many years, the winning couple will once again be able to take home the porcelain figure of Johann Strauss from the Augarten Manufactory, sponsored by the DanceSport Academy, as a trophy!
Kurt Mayer Memorial Cup The winning couple of the Vienna State Championship will receive the "Kurt Mayer Memorial Cup."
